Things that made me sad today (April 30, 2011)

The 3 year old son of a guy that lived across the street from me when I was a teenager died this week. He fell out of a playhouse, hurt his foot, went into surgery, and never woke up. My heart hurts for the family.

Sometimes it's that one thing that is too sad......hug your kids

Things that made me smile today (April 29, 2011)

  • Taking Kiddo on her Kindergarten field trip to the zoo.

  • Driving one of her friends on the field trip.

  • Listening to the two of them talk about Hollywood.

  • I asked them why Hollywood was so exciting. They said "famous people live there. Singers and dancers and stuff"

  • Asking the friend where she lives, and getting the following response: "From school, you go straight, and then you turn, and then you go a little bit more and turn some more times". I asked her what street she lives on, but she doesn't know.

  • Hearing the two of them "tricking" me from the back seat. They told me there's a new girl in school named Krista Rona Maniah, and her mom's name is Dandelion. Her favorite color is purple, and she has 3 sisters. Then they made up a new boy, and a class Parrott. I think the cutest part of it all was that they really thought I hadn't caught on.

  • Seeing LittleMan when dropping Kiddo off after school, and getting one of his fabulous grins.

My Letter to the Editor

This is the letter to the editor I think I'm going to send. I just want to talk with my daughter's teacher this afternoon before I send it.

---------------------------------

Yesterday parents of children in the [XYZ] School District were sent a letter concerning the suspension of budget negotiations at a state level, and how the district was looking at different budget scenarios for the 2011/2012 school year. I appreciated receiving the letter, although I wasn’t exactly clear on the purpose of the letter until I continued reading.

The last two paragraphs of this three paragraph letter focused on the upcoming spring break. It acknowledged that the spring break weeks for [K-8 district] are different than those for [High School District], and apologized for the conflict. It then stated, “…if you must take your child out of school for family vacations or for other personal business, please consider making a donation to the district of $28.52 per child for each day of absence.”

I am amazed by the audacity of the superintendent and school district. We pay income taxes and property taxes which help fund the schools. Now the district is asking us to donate additional money for days that our children don’t attend school?

I fully believe that we need to do more to support our schools, and to make them places where students can reach their full potential. I also believe that time spent with family is valuable, and if our kids need to miss a day or two to build lasting memories as a family, well, sometimes that is what has to be done.

Overall, I felt that this letter was in very poor taste. The feeling that persisted after reading the letter was “it’s all about the $$”, rather than “it’s all about how well we can educate our children.”

I hope that Dr. [superintendent] will keep this in mind the next time a letter is sent home with our children.
